CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu recorded 5,489 new Covid-19 cases which pushed the case tally to 6,19,996 on Sunday when the state added 66 deaths that pushed the case tally to 9,784. At the end of the day after 5,558 were discharged and 46,120 people were still under treatment for the viral infection.
While all districts recorded new cases, five of them had more than two hundred cases each. With 1,348 Cases Chennai, the worst affected district, continued to top the table followed by Coimbatore, which recorded 474 cases. While Chennai’s neighbouring district Chengalpet (381) had the third highest number of cases, Salem had 357 followed by the central district Thanjavur (242).
Nine out of every ten infected people, however, have been cured, according to statistics released by the directorate of public Health. While three districts – Chennai (12), Coimbatore (7) and Chengalpet (6) recorded more than five deaths in the last 24 hours, Chennai, Chengalpet and Tiruvallur had the highest number of deaths. The case fatality rate – percentage of total number of deaths over total number of cases – was the highest in Madurai and Sivagangai. They had a fatality rate of 2.3% compared to the state average of 1.6%.
Chennai’s neighbouring districts, Chengalpet (381), Tiruvallur (197), and Kancheepuram (146) together reported 724 cases. Together the region had 23 deaths, including a dozen from Chennai. The Chennai region had 2072 fresh cases on Sunday and 17502 active patients. The other seven northern districts reported 625 cases and five deaths. Cuddalore reported 141 cases, closely followed by Vellore (140) and Tiruvannamalai (104). With 22,636 patients seeking treatment, the north zone had 49% of total active cases.
Together the eight western districts logged 1,546 cases and 20 deaths. After Coimbatore and Salem, Namakkal (165), Erode (149), Tiruppur (147), and Nilgiris (122) recorded more than 100 cases, while there were 73 cases in Krishnagiri and 59 in Dharamapuri .
The 10 southern districts together recorded 587 cases and 11 deaths. All districts in the south, barring Kanyakumari, which had 117 cases, recorded cases in two digits. The central districts added 654 cases – a majority in Thanjavur (244) followed by Tiruvarur (148), Pudukottai (72). TActive cases in the zone were 5232 compared to 4,707 in the South.
In the last 24 hours 84,159 people were tested for covid-19 in 189 authorised RTPCR testing labs. On Sunday 5558 people were discharged, taking the total number of people cured to 5,64,092.
