CHENNAI: DMK Lok Sabha MP from Tuticorin and party’s women’s wing head Kanimozhi will lead a candle light march on Monday evening seeking justice for the Hathras gang-rape victim.
Kanimozhi will lead the women’s wing march towards Raj Bhavan in Chennai, said DMK president MK Stalin, while directing members of the women’s wing to participate in large numbers.
“Uttar Pradesh government, which should have extended its arm in support to the affected family, has done the opposite. While the victim’s body was burnt hurriedly, even without allowing the family members, a police official later sought to deny that the victim was raped,” Stalin recalled.
While this has led to an outrage across the country, the police prevented Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from visiting Hathras. They were arrested and were later let off.
“The candle light march is to show our solidarity with the victim’s family and seeking justice for them,” Stalin said.
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per the Supreme Court’s directives on cases related to sexual assault)
