CHENNAI: Customs officials on Saturday seized gold worth Rs 39.5 lakh at the Chennai International Airport.
Two passengers — Kaja Mydeen, 33, and Mohammad Sharkhan, 21, of Chennai, who arrived from Dubai by Fly Dubai flight FZ 8517, were intercepted and checked.
Two gold bars weighing 232g each and one gold cut bit — 31g — were recovered from both of them which were concealed in their pant pockets.
A total of 526g of gold valued at Rs 27.4 lakh was recovered and seized under Customs Act.
Two other cases were booked against Abdul Jaleel Mohamed Ali, 33, of Trichy and Ravuthar Naina Mohamad Abdul Hameeth, 39, of Chennai, on Saturday night.
The duo arrived by Air India Express Flight IX 1644 from Dubai and were intercepted and checked.
Four bundles (two each) of gold paste were recovered from their socks and two gold chains (one each) were recovered from their pant pockets.
A total of 232g of gold valued at Rs 12.16 lakhs was recovered and seized under Customs Act.
Totally, 758g of gold worth Rs 39.56 lakh was recovered and seized under Customs Act 1962.
