Tamil Nadu records 5,595 new Covid-19 cases; overall case fatality rate dropped to 1.5% | Chennai News


CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu recorded 5,595 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, pushing the case tally to 6,08,885. With 67 deaths, the total tally has been pushed to 9,653.
Following the discharge of 5,603 people, 46,294 are noted to be under treatment.
The Chennai region and the several other districts in the west continue to remain in red zones.
After fresh cases across districts were counted on Friday, among the top five were three districts in the Chennai region namely, Chennai, Chengalpet and Tiruvallur; and two districts from the West namely, Coimbatore and Salem. Chennai (1,278 ) recorded the maximum number of fresh cases followed by Coimbatore (495).
While cases in the southern belt have majorly reduced, the central zone is seeing a marginal decrease, and the cases in the west and north remain high.
The overall case fatality rate dropped to 1.5% but the fall of active cases rate has slowed down. On Friday, although all districts recorded cases, 14 districts recorded zero deaths.
Chennai’s neighbouring districts, Chengalpet (396), Tiruvallur (255), and Kancheepuram (157) together reported 808 cases. The region in total reported 20 deaths, including 14 from Chennai.
The other seven northern districts reported 721 cases and 10 deaths. Together, the 11 districts in the north, including Chennai, reported 2807 cases and 30 deaths. The north zone had 22,292 active cases.
The western districts reported the highest cases and deaths following the northern district. The districts had 13,840 active cases, including 4,913 in Coimbatore and 2,624 in Salem.
Together the eight western districts logged 1,567 cases and 20 deaths. The 10 southern districts recorded 531 cases and six deaths while the central districts added 688 cases and 11 deaths. Active cases in the central zone was 5393 compared to 4752 in the South.
