CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has decided to give 70% weightage for internal exams and 30% weightage for previous semester exams while deciding marks for college students for exams cancelled over the Covid-19 crisis. The state government promoted all except final year students without exams.
“For allied and optional subjects, 100% weightage will be given to the internal exams,” higher education secretary Apoorva said in an order.
If students have arrears from earlier semesters, they have to write those exams later. “If practical exams were not conducted, students would be awarded marks based on their lab scores. In distance education, students should be promoted with minimum marks if there are no internal exams,” she said in the order.
Those who are not satisfied with the marks can write special exams to increase their score. “Considering the prevailing Covid-19 situation, if any student scored less, they would be promoted with grace marks,” the order further said. As per the UGC guidelines, 50% of marks would be awarded on the basis of internal evaluation and remaining 50% marks can be awarded on the basis of the previous semester. The internal evaluation can be continuous evaluation, prelims, mid-semester, internal assignments or other assessments.
The state government is considering the modalities of conducting exams for final year students. Colleges also plan to start next academic year from this week post the cancellation of semester exams.
