SALEM: A fine of Rs 500 will be imposed on people who spit in public places, said Salem district collector S A Raman on Tuesday.
He said the measure would be implemented across the district including Salem Municipal Corporation with immediate effect.
“The fine will be slapped under Section 2 of the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897,” the collector said, appealing to people to cooperate with the district administration to curb the pandemic.
Addressing reporters, Raman said medical experts and the state government have insisted on the need to wear masks in public. However, many have failed to follow this. “People have also been spitting in public places without considering the possibility of the virus spreading through saliva,” he added.
