NEW DELHI: India on Friday tested 4.2 lakh samples, the highest so far on a single day, for the coronavirus infection. It also recorded the highest number of new cases in a day at 48,894 even as tests per million (TPM) stood at 11,485.
The health ministry said 3.50 lakh tests were done every day over the last week. However, the overall positivity rate is still above 10% at 11.61%. Officials said the increased testing will continue till positivity rate comes down to 10% and then further to 5%.
The Centre has also advised all states to keep up the strategy of “test, track and treat” which may lead to higher number of daily positive cases initially but would eventually achieve a decline as has been demonstrated in Delhi, an official said.
The government said the increased testing has enabled early identification of cases and timely treatment leading to less number of deaths. On Saturday, the health ministry recorded a further decline in fatality rate to 2.35% from over 3% in the beginning of July.
Increased testing is driven by expansion in testing capacity, the government said. From 121 labs in March, India ramped up its capacity to 1,301 labs in July. Of these, 902 are government-run and 399 are in private sector. Overall, India has conducted 1.58 crore tests so far and has a testing capacity of 11,484 tests per million.
