COIMBATORE: A three-member gang attempted to burgle four houses in a residential area at Balaguru Garden in Peelamedu here on Saturday.
The gang managed to escape before police arrived. The residents handed over the CCTV footage of the burglars who had covered their faces with cloths. One gang member carried an iron rod.
The Peelamedu (law&order) police have assigned a beat patrol for this area.
The gang members attempted to break open the doors of four houses. On hearing sounds, occupants of the houses switched on the lights and the burglars were unable to execute their plan.
They also locked three houses from outside. Two college students on the first floor of their respective houses noticed the gang members and contacted the police control room.
On Saturday morning, assistant commissioner of police (East sub-division) Somasundaram, Peelamedu (law & order) police inspector T Jothi, sub-inspector Gnanasekar and their team visited the residential area and held inquiries.
“Around 300 families are residing in the area and people are under shock after seeing the three-member gang who tried to break into houses. We will increase the number of CCTV cameras in this area,” said C Venkidupathi, president, Balaguru Garden Resident Welfare Association.
“We have allotted a beat patrolling exclusively for the area, and the night patrolling team has also been instructed to visit the area often. We also have footage of seven people roaming in their underpants at Deepam Nagar, Irugur on Thursday morning. We have also tightened the security at Deepam Nagar,” said Somasundaram.
He added that the police were trying to identify the burglars.
