MUMBAI: The BMC on Friday sealed off the 50-year-old Navjivan Co-op Housing Society in Mumbai Central following a spike in Covid-19 cases reported from its 18 buildings.
Municipal officials said they were forced to seal off the entire premises when a steady rise in cases was observed. Assistant municipal commissioner of D ward Prashant Gaikwad said there had been around 60 cases in the society and sealing individual buildings was not working as people were not following the home quarantine protocol.
Of the 18 buildings, 17 are residential and one has offices. Shops line the front and a few temples stand inside. The buildings have 11 storeys. Local MLA Amin Patel said there were a dozen gates. “It is one of the oldest societies in Mumbai and has a large floating population. There would be over 3,000 people within it,” he said. Society chairman Prashant Shah said a few senior citizens had died and active cases numbered around 40.
