VILLUPURAM: Two girls, aged four and seven years, died of suffocation after getting locked in a damaged car in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday evening.
The girls were identified as E Rajeshwari, 7, and A Vanitha, 4, of Kuladeepamangalam village. The duo were friends, and their fathers were farm workers.
A police officer said Rajeshwari and Vanitha were playing on Thursday evening and got into the damaged car that was owned by their neighbour Raja, 35. Two years ago, the car met with an accident and was parked in the area. It was no more in use.
All four doors of the car were jammed from inside. While the girls managed to get into the car easily, they could not come out.
“The girls, who got stuck in the car, died of suffocation,” the police official said.
A passerby noticed the girls lying unconscious inside the car and alerted their family members.
Rajeshwari and Vanitha were rushed to Tirukovilur Government Hospital where the doctors declared them as ‘dead on arrival.’
The bodies were handed over to the families after postmortem.
R Rajasekaran, sub-inspector of the Manalurpet police station, said, “We visited the spot and conducted inquiries. No complaint has been lodged yet by the family members. A case has been registered under Section 174 (Unnatural death) of the CrPC. Investigations were on with car owner Raja.”
