CHENNAI: A 25-year-old man from Alanganallur was hacked to death when he was travelling on a bike along with his aunt on Sunday morning. The woman suffered injuries on her hands and admitted to a hospital.
The victim was identified as R Vignesh, 25, from Alanganallur. He was working with a departmental store in the city. During the lockdown, he left the job and started working in a poultry farm along with his brother.
Vignesh was planning to attend a function in Sikkandarchavady on Sunday morning. He went to Palamedu to pick up his aunt K Jamuna, 35. On the way, a bike-borne gang intercepted him at Kallanai village.
They attacked him using sharp weapons. Jamuna suffered multiple cut injuries on her hands, thies and head when she tried to save him. While Vignesh died on the same spot, the woman was shifted to a hospital, where she was undergoing treatment under critical condition.
Madurai range deputy inspector general of police S Rajendran and district superintendent of police Sujit Kumar visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.
Based on a complaint, a case was registered with the Alanganallur police station. A search is under way for the accused. Police sources said that a couple of suspects have been secured and they are being questioned.
