TUTICORIN: Two 19-year-olds were arrested for the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in a village in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
Sathankulam police officials, who arrested the duo, identified the accused as Mutheeswaran and Nandeeswaran.
They were booked under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code and 5(m) (whoever commits penetrative sexual assault on a child below twelve years) read with 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Pocso Act.
Though the girl and the prime accused are from the same scheduled caste community, the case was also booked under sections 3(1)(w) and 3(2)(v-a) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as Nandeeswaran is from a different community.
After the girl’s body was recovered, an autopsy was performed at Tirunelveli Government Medical College and Hospital on Thursday evening.
Superintendent of police (SP), Tuticorin district, S Jayakumar said, “Though there was no visible evidence for rape when the body was examined by a scientific officer, we registered the case under Pocso Act based on the complaint lodged by the girl’s mother.”
The case sections would be altered when the charge sheet is filed, he added.
