MUMBAI: The property cell of the city crime branch on Wednesday raided a plush flat at Chapel road at Bandra and arrested three persons who were playing poker using a Chinese app.
What has baffled the police is the accused were running online gambling racket and the mode of payment was made through hawala channels.
The three accused have been identified as Durgesh Bharat Pawar (27), Mithul Jayesh Pabari (26) and Jhalak Jayesh Pabari (33). Police have seized three laptops, five mobile phones around 2,000 chips, two routers, and cash of Rs 90,000. Police said that due to lockdown, many businessmen are indulging in gambling.
Police have booked them under the IPC sections of gambling and under cheating case as the SIM cards have been registered under false names.
Acting on the tip off the police team led by inspector Kedar Pawar and Laxmikant Salunke raided a flat West Side building at Chapel road Bandra and arrested the three organisers. Police said that the accused were gambling on a Chinese PP poker app on which the player has to open an online account, deposit certain amount and then play.
“As the game is played online on individual’s mobile phone and no cash is involved it becomes difficult to arrest and prosecute them. The accused creates groups where one person opens account and pays rest members pays him later”, Said Pawar.
