The Maharashtra government announced extension of the general lockdown until July 31 with an aim to contain the Covid-19 surge. The notification issued by the state government has also restricted inter-district travel between municipal corporations within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to that for office purposes and essential activities like medical reasons.

*The number of Covid-19 cases in Palghar district on Tuesday breached the 10,000-mark, forcing the administration to impose a 14-day lockdown in 29 new hotspots in the Vasai-Virar region from Wednesday.
*The flattening of the Covid curve in Mumbai is most apparent in the death charts of BMC’s hospitals: They have witnessed between 65% and 80% drop in the fatality rate over the past few weeks.
*In a clear sign that the epicentre of the pandemic has shifted, Mumbai no longer has the highest number of active coronavirus cases among the state’s districts. As on Tuesday, Thane district had the most active cases (34,006), followed by Pune (23,738) and Mumbai (22,773). Mumbai’s drop from first to third spot has been brought about by higher recovery and stabilisation in new detections.
*Three weeks after replacing Navi Mumbai civic chief Annasaheb Misal with Abhijit Bangar, only to stay the order, the state government did another about turn on Tuesday. It transferred Misal, and Bangar took charge as NMMC commissioner in dramatic fashion.
